Congress leader Manish Tewari today alleged "political vendetta" behind the IT and ED raids on some premises of business associates connected with Congress leader Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

Tewari, a former Information and Broadcasting Minister, said, "The entire exercise smacks of political vendetta and vindictiveness. It has obviously been timed keeping in mind Tamil Nadu elections."

He alleged that the action was "well-publicised three days prior to its taking place by a senior BJP leader on television. Therefore, it does not require to have the knowledge of rocket science to understand that the ED action is a command performance."

In Chennai, officials of Income Tax department and the Enforcement Directorate today conducted searches at "some places" of business associates connected with Karti.

Former Finance Minister Chidambaram accused the government of a "malicious onslaught" launched by it against his family and said if it wants to target him it should do so directly and not harass friends of his son Karti.
