A Jammu and Kashmir government official was today arrested for allegedly taking Rs 10,000 in bribe from a contractor in Rajouri district, a state vigilance organisation spokesman said.

The official, who is in-charge village level workers, fell in the state vigilance organisation (SVO) trap after a written complaint was lodged by a contractor, alleging that he was being forced to pay a bribe for clearance of his bill amounting to Rs 2.5 lakh.

The bill was to be made to Mirza in connection with the construction of a water tank at village Bhattian in Plangarh block, the spokesman said.

He said the complainant named the official and a junior engineer, saying he had already paid Rs 10,000 to the accused who were demanding a total bribe of Rs 60,000 as their commission for processing of bills for payment.

"A case was registered under Prevention of Corruption Act against the accused public servants and further investigation is on," the spokesman said.

He said while the official was arrested, the junior engineer is being questioned and if proven guilty, he would also be arrested.
