Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Friday asked young journalists to become the 'voice of the voiceless.'

He was speaking at an event organised by the Kerala Media Academy to hand over media awards instituted by it for the year 2017-18.

"Young journalists must become the voice of the voiceless. You must be the tongue of those who cannot speak.

Those who cannot articulate, cannot even complain about things which are happening to them," Khan said.

He also said young journalists will understand the importance of their profession while raising their voice for the poor.

Khan said journalism in India has been enriched by articles and social commitment of many media personalities who were courageous and committed to their profession.

"Though the press is the fourth pillar of democracy, it does not enjoy the status of the legislative or the judiciary. But an independent press is undoubtedly crucial for democracy," the Governor said.

He handed over media awards as well as the award for the best college magazines for the academic year 2017-18.

Kerala Media Academy, an autonomous body under the Kerala government, was established in 1979.

It's a joint venture of the state government and the Kerala Union of Working Journalists and Indian Newspaper Society.
