A day after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa claimed Tamil Nadu's electricity needs have been fulfilled, DMK chief Karunanidhi today asked her to answer the people over charges of irregularities in State run power monolith Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation.

Referring to a writ plea in the Madras High Court over allegations of irregularities in TANGEDCO, he said, "it will only be appropriate for her to come forward to answer the people on such allegations, besides answering the court."

Jayalalithaa had yesterday claimed that "Tamil Nadu now shines as a state which has fulfilled its electricity needs."

She cited factors like power generation from new projects like Vallur and Mettur and long-term Power Purchase Agreements to substantiate that she addressed the issue of serious power shortage when she assumed office in 2011.

Quoting extensively from media reports on the charges in the court case, the DMK chief said Jayalalithaa's claims were "strange and amusing."

The writ plea reportedly prayed for a probe into the alleged irregularities and scam.
