The ruling Left Front in the state consolidated its base in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTADC) by winning more than 90 per cent seats in the village committee elections held on February 24.

Of the 587 village committees, so far results of 575 have been announced of which the Left Front has secured absolute majority in 515 committees, State Election Commission secretary Tamal Majumder said.

The Congress has won 10 committees, Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) 24 and Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) has won 14 committees. Independents have won the rest, Majumder told reporters.

Around 84 per cent turnout was recorded in the TTAADC poll to constitute village committees. Election was held in 528 of the 587 village committees as Left parties were elected unopposed in 59 of them.

The tribal council area is formed with two-thirds of the state territory and is home to tribal people, who form one-third of the state's population. The village committees are equivalent to village panchayat committees.

Meanwhile, the ruling CPI-M, the major partner of the Left Front, in a statement congratulated the people for the massive victory.

"This is a verdict in favour of harmony, peace and development for which the Left Front always strives hard," the statement said.
