Landslip near Barliar, traffic hit for over two hours

Vehicular traffic was disrupted for about two and half hours today on

Mettupalayam-Udhagamandalam Road, following landslip near Barliar in Nilgiris district, following heavy rains that lashed the area last night.

A big boulder and four trees fell on the road on 9th Hairpin bend around 8.30 AM, paralysing traffic on the highway, police said.

Traffic was diverted via Kothagiri,they said.

Personnel from PWD and Fire Service and Rescue department managed to remove the boulder and trees with the help of earth movers, police said, adding, traffic resumed around 12 Noon.

Meanwhile, Nilgiris district authorities advised big trucks and lorries to avoid Barliar Road during night, expecting more rains, which may result in further landslips, officials said.
 

Udhagamandalam, Kothagiri and Gudalur experienced heavy rains from midnight yesterday, resulting in chilly weather from early hours today, the sources said.
