"Girls" creator Lena Dunham criticised pop songs that talk about consent, after singer Justin Bieber performed his new single "What Do You Mean" at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.

The 29-year-old star did not explicitly mention Bieber in her tweet but made a reference to some lyrics from the track, suggesting that it alludes to rape culture, reported Aceshowbiz.

"Let's do away with pop songs where a girl nods yes when she means no and vice versa, ok?" she wrote, referring to the lines, "What do you mean? When you nod your head yes, But you wanna say no, What do you mean?"

Bieber had previously explained the meaning of his song, saying, "Girls are often flip-floppy. They say something, and then they mean something else. 'What do you mean?... I don't really know, that's why I'm asking.'"

"What Do You Mean" is the first offering from Bieber's upcoming album, which is set to release on November 13.

The 21-year-old singer performed the track live for the first time at the award show, the same day its official music video was debuted.
