Lt Governor Bedi leads R-Day celebrations in Puducherry

: Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today unfurled the tricolour at the Indira Gandhi sports complex here on the occasion of the country's 69th Republic Day.

Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, his Cabinet colleagues, Speaker V Vaithilingam, Legislators, officials and freedom fighters were among those who witnessed the celebrations.

Bedi, who earlier inspected a guard of honour presented by the Puducherry Police, also took salute at the march past by various contingents of police, Home Guards, Ex-Servicemen, NCC volunteers and school students.

The former IPS officer distributed President's Police Medals for meritorious services to Superintendent of Police Konda Venkateswara Rao, Inspectors N Selvam and S Bascarane and also to a Sub Inspector of Police R Umaibalan.
 

Union Home Minister's medals for excellence in Police training were handed an Assistant Sub Inspector and a Head Constable on the occasion.

Lt Governor' Medals for Extraordinary services were also presented to police officers.

Forty-seven schools that had come out with outstanding performance in the SSLC public examinations in March-April 2017 were presented jointly the Chief Minister's rolling trophy.

A number of departments presented tableaux highlighting their achievements.

School children presented cultural events at the end.

The day was celebrated at Pondicherry University here with Vice Chancellor Gurmeet Singh unfurling the flag.
