The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has directed a private insurance firm to pay a compensation of Rs 10.35 lakh to the family members of a cyclist who died in a road accident.

The victim, P Subramani (44) of Choolaimedu died four years ago after his bicycle was knocked down by a speeding van at Arcot Road. A petition was filed by his wife and two sons and his 65-year-old mother.

They contended that they were depending upon the income generated by Subramani, who was working as brass moulder in a moulding company and earning Rs 6,500 per month.

He succumbed to grievous injuries in the accident on March 21, 2010. They demanded that the owner of the vehicle G Harikrishnan and Bajaj Allianz General Insurance company pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh. The insurance firm denied the averments and stated that the accident was caused due to Subramani's negligence.

On completion of the trial, special sub-judge, J Chandran directed the insurance firm, which has insured the vehicle, to pay Rs 10.35 lakh compensation to the family members.
