'Maid' held for series of thefts

A 33-year-old "maid" was arrested for series of thefts in the city, police said today.

Explaining the modus operandi of the woman, identified as Narmada Khan alias Bharti, a police official said the accused used to pose as a domestic help to secure job in flats in posh localities of the city.

A complainant, a resident of Gokuldham in suburban Goregaon, approached police on last Thursday with a complaint that gold ornaments worth Rs 22.85 lakh and cash amounting to Rs 30,000 were stolen from his house between January 19 and 25.

On inquiry, it came to light that the complainant's maid Bharati had stopped coming to work from the past several days. "But they didn't have any details about her whereabouts,"the official said.
 

Based on their complaint, Dindoshi police registered a case under section 381 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master) against unknown persons, he said.

Bharti was detained during investigation from Shivaji nagar area near Mulund check-post in Thane (west).

She was formally arrested on January 26.

Police have also recovered stolen gold worth Rs 16 lakh from her.

As many as 15 such cases have been registered against the woman at various police stations, like Oshiwara, Amboli etc. in suburan police stations.
