CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat today criticised Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal for allegedly failing to protect women of the state.

The cases of torture against women are increasing in the state, but the offenders are not punished, Karat said at a public meeting here.

Rather, she alleged that there were instances where government lawyers were found standing by the accused.

The meeting was organised on completion of a cycle rally of various frontal organisations of the CPI(M) to protest against torture against women in the state.

Lodging a 'chargesheet' against the Mamata Banerjee government, Karat alleged that besides failing to protect women, the regime also failed to stand by farmers and democratic environment is absent in the educational institutions of the state.
