Press Trust of India  |  Coimbatore

A 40-year old man was arrested in Udumalpet in neighbouring Tirupur district on Tuesday for alleged threat to carry out a blast at the Mettur Dam, police said.

The Police control room in Chennai received a phone call past midnight on Monday stating that an explosion will occur at the dam if Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami released water from the reservoir as scheduled.

On an alert from Chennai, Udumalpet police investigated and traced the call to Kanhiyur in Madathukulam in Udumalpet and arrested Kumaravel, police said.

Palaniswami released water from the dam on Tuesday morning for irrigation in the Delta districts of the state.
