Man gets two-and-half years' jail for MGNREGA fraud

A local court today sentenced a man to two-and-a-half years' imprisonment for fraudulently withdrawing money under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employee Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

The Chief Judicial Magistrate Kishtwar, Balbir Lal Jaswal, today convicted Sanjay Kumar for cheating and fraud, and handed down the jail term.

The bank passbooks and job cards of eight people were forcibly taken by the accused who used the same to withdraw money from their bank accounts.

A case was registered against Kumar and it was found that the accused had managed to withdraw Rs 95,725 from their accounts, the court noted.
