A man was today arrested for allegedly setting ablaze a 28-year-old woman on suspicion of "infidelity".

According to police, the woman was a widow and having an "affair" with the accused for the last three years.

The incident occurred on May 8 here when he allegedly poured kerosene on the women and set her on fire, a day after confronting her about a man who claimed to be her "beau".

She was immediately rushed to a local hospital from where the doctors referred her to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi for treatment.

On May 11, she succumbed to her burn injuries in the hospital.

Before her death, she gave a statement against two unknown persons which hindered the process of investigation, Saharanpur SP Subhash Chandra Dubey said.

Meanwhile, the woman's brother alleged that her in-laws were behind the incident.

"The Crime Branch, in its investigation, found that the incident took place after the accused received a call in which an unknown person claimed to be the woman's lover.

"When she declined knowing any such person, he burned her alive in a fit of rage," Dubey said.

The accused was on the run before he was nabbed, he added.
