"A 1.5-kg gold strip was fixed on the metal border of the bag and was cleverly coated with mercury. This was done to avoid detection by authorities. About 3 kg of saffron was also recovered from the same bag," a CISF spokesperson said.
The man, who arrived from Dubai at the IGI airport and was supposed to take off for Bangkok, has been handed over to the Customs authorities for further investigation, he said.
