Man killed as rival groups of panchayat poll candidates clash

An elderly man was shot dead this morning allegedly in firing between supporters of two panchayat poll candidates in Bahraich district, police said.

Gulab Singh alias Gulle, 70, was killed and four other persons injured in the firing in Kaisarganj area of Bahraich, a police spokesperson said here.

The incident occurred when the rival factions of panchayat candidates in Rasoolabad village Rajan Singh and Reeta Singh had a skirmish over some issue, after which the latter's supporters opened fire, the spokesperson said.

An FIR has been registered against 24 persons, of which six have been arrested, the official said.

The incident comes a day after 10 policemen were injured in a clash with supporters of local panchayat poll candidates in Mau district of Uttar Pradesh.
