What if Peggy Carter becomes Captain America, and Bucky Barnes fights a zombie Captain America while prince T'Challa from "Black Panther" becomes Star Lord?
These and other similar possibilities were teased by Marvel boss Kevin Feige as he introduced the studio's first animated series, "What If...?" at D23 Expo here.
Feige said the series, to be launched on Disney+, will explore different possibilities in the 23 movies from Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and will also feature voices of almost all the actors, who have worked in the films from the studio.
"'What If...?' is based on comic stories we have loved for years where they take a storyline you know and change one element and see how things could get different. The 23 films of MCU are going to showcase one little difference in each episode and see how things change," he said
Feige then invited director Bryan Andrews and head writer Ashley Bradley to the stage to share some footage from the series with fans.
"Time, space, reality, it's more than a linear path. It's a prism of endless possibility where a single choice can branch out in different realities, creating alternate worlds from the ones you know. Each a reflection of what could have been. Some heroes will rise, others will fall and nothing will be what could've been.
"I am your guide to these vast new realities. Follow me and dare to face the unknown. And ponder the question, What If?," Jeffrey Wright's The Watcher intoned as the footage played out on screen.
Feige was then joined by Hayley Atwell, who plays Peggy in the MCU, to share her excitement about the story.
The actor said Peggy's character is like a gift that keeps giving. "Fans love Peggy and they want her back," she added.
"What If...?" will bow out on Disney+ in 2021.
