Mediapersons today defied the diktat of the militants and observed 65th Republic Day here today.
Senior journalist Dinanath Singh hoisted the National Flag at the Guwahati Press Club here and urged all to resist any threat to the dignity of the Tricolour which is coloured with sacrifices of innumerable martyrs.
Senior journalist Rupam Barua described how a spark lit in the Press Club premises in 1998 by a section of journalists in the face of heightened militancy, spread like a fire and people began observing Republic Day and Independence Day ignoring militant boycott calls and threats.
Mediapersons and citizens then took out a procession through the main streets of the city and raised patriotic slogans.
