A truck was set on fire by a mob for allegedly transporting bovines in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir today.

The truck, that was on its way from Jammu to Srinagar through Mughal Road, was attacked by locals near Chingus, a police officer said.

Soon the news spread and a large number of people gathered and after rescuing the animals set the truck on fire, the officer said.

The driver of the truck managed to flee from the spot, he said, adding that the mob also held a protest and blocked the Jammu-Poonch highway, demanding action against the people involved in bovine smuggling through Mughal Road.

"Two cases have been registered, one for bovine smuggling and the other one for setting the truck on fire," Station House Officer (SHO) Chingus, Chaman Gorkha said.

No arrests have been made so far.
