An angry mob torched the house of a gangster at Sabalanga village in Kendrapara district this evening, police said

The agitated people gave vent to the anger as a group of criminals owing allegiance to a Kendrapara-based crime syndicate unleashed lawlessness in neighbouring Kurujanga marketplace and hurled country-made bombs at two shops, injuring a local traders.

Both the shops suffered damage following the bomb throwing incident, police said.

To defuse tension, police patrolling has beefed up in both the villages with deployment of two platoons of armed police constabulary, said Kendrapara Superintendent of Police, Rabi Narayan Behera.

The anti-socials on two motor bikes attacked the shops as its owners had refused to pay them extortion sum as demanded by them earlier. The criminals after hurling bombs immediately fled from the spot.

Later angry people retaliated and set afire the house of Seikh Abdullah, history-sheeter whom the people at the marketplace had spotted committing the crime. All the law-breakers have been identified. Hunt is on to nab them, the SP added.
