An elderly man was administered glucose meant for animals at the district hospital here, following which a nurse and two hospital staffers were suspended.

Azimmullah (65) complained of vomiting and was admitted to the district hospital yesterday where he was administered veterinary dextrose - a form of glucose, officials said.

"Prime facie it appears that nurse Durga Dhurve, male ward in-charge A Thomas and store-keeper Swadesh Nayak were responsible for the act. The trio have been suspended," district Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr Shashi Thakur told PTI today.

This is a serious matter that veterinary glucose bottles have crept in cartons, the CMHO said.

A notice has been slapped on the pharmaceutical company which supplied dextrose, and medicine stocks in the hospital are being examined, she said.

She said according to practice, the medicine before being used in hospital is sent for examination to a laboratory in Hyderabad. After the laboratory's clearance, payment to suppliers (pharmaceuticals) is made, Dr Thakur added.

The victim is said to be stable now.
