A BJP legislator today called for exploring the possibilities of setting up of Shardapeeth University, saying it would be immensely helpful in propagating Sharda script.
There is a need of preserving and promoting the glorious heritage. There are possibilities of setting up of Shardapeeth University and it will be immensely helpful in propagating Sharda script, BJP MLC Surinder Ambardar said.
The Vice Chancellor of University of Jammu R D Sharma stressed on the need to explore possibilities about introducing Sanskrit as a subject as an open choice course.

"Evolving a viable mechanism in this regard will prove to be useful for those having interest, love and aptitude towards Sanskrit," R D Sharma said while inaugurating five-day workshop on the revival of Sharda Script held at the University Camps this morning.
The workshop is being organized by the Department of Sanskrit in collaboration with the Millennium India Education Foundation, New Delhi and Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi.
He expressed happiness over the cooperation offered by the Millennium India Education Foundation (MIEF) and said the University of Jammu will be looking forward to have exhaustive academic research in the Sharda Script.
Dwelling upon the history of the Sharda Script, Prof Sharma said that it is one of the oldest script known and was used for writing the Vedic scriptures.
He said that such type of workshops will rewrite the history of the Department of Sanskrit.
Presenting his Key-note address, Dr S S Toshkhani an eminent expert of Sharda Script dwelt on the history of Sharda Script and said that there is a need to revive this script.
Dr Toshkhani said that the Sharda Script is one of the oldest scripts but is on the verge of extinction and needs immediate revival.
He said that more than 3500 manuscripts in Sharda are in Kashmir.
