Concerned over the level of destruction and sufferings in the Uttarakhand floods, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today said that a lesson should be taken from the calamity, arguing that environment could be protected only by afforestation measures.
Inaugurating 'Van Mahotsava' here, Akhilesh said that "a lesson should be taken from the calamity in the neighbouring Uttarakhand, claiming thousands of lives and crores of properties".
He said that a target of planting more than four crore trees has been fixed this year.
Under this special drive, plantation has been done on 50 acres of land alongside Sharda canal in Para area.
The chief minister, while urging the people to protect the environment, said that public participation was needed in the plantation programmes.
He also asked people to remain alert towards global warming and emphasised on planting big and traditional trees.
