: A newborn female baby affected with phocomelia, a rare congenital deformity, was handed over to the 'cradle baby centre' at Nagamarai, 48 km from here today.
Phocomelia is a condition in which the hands or feet are attached close to the trunk, the limbs being grossly underdeveloped or absent.
Social welfare department sources said the 28-year-old mother of one female child, gave birth to the baby on April 1, 2014 at a Primary Health Center at Pennagaram. As the newborn had phacomalia, the parents felt it difficult to take care of it and handed the infant over to the to Cradle Baby center at Government Dharmapuri Medical College

In their affidavit, the parents said they were taking the step as they were unable to take care of the child.
Since its inception in Apr 13 2002, this cradle baby centre has received 1,409 babies including 74 male, the sources said.
