National Human Rights Commission today issued notices to Barabanki district authorities in Uttar Pradesh in connection with allegations that some influential people forced a Dalit youth to manual scavenging at gunpoint.
According to an NHRC statement, notices have been served to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Barabanki asking them to submit a report in the matter within two weeks.
The notices were issued after NHRC took suo motu cognizance of a media report that some influential people of village Adra under Badasarai Police Station in Barabanki forced the youth to manual scavenging at gunpoint.

The incident was reported on September 24 and it was alleged that police did not register the complaint of the victim under appropriate sections of law.
The Commission observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights.
