Trade unions affiliated to DMK and ruling AIADMK in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation today decided to temporarily suspend their indefinite strike over wage revision issue which was to begin from July 3.
"The protest has been temporarily suspended. A new date will be announced soon," S Rajavanian, DMK-affiliated union's General Secretary, told reporters here.
The unions would hold roadside meetings and stage protests and would announce a proper protest programme later, he said after a joint council meeting of the NLC trade unions including recognised and 12 non-recognised ones.
The Neyveli Workers Progressive Union, affiliated to the DMK, and the AIADMK Employees Workers Union had issued strike notices separately to the NLC management on June 18 over their demand for 30 per cent hike in wages besides two increments.
Wage revision is implemented once every five years. The last revision was in 2007 and so far NLC was delaying implementing a fresh one, they said.
According to the unions, they decided to go on indefinite strike after tripartite talks between the Central Labour Commissioner K Kandasamy, the management of the NLC and the representatives of the trade unions held at Chennai on June 23, failed.
