Amid allegations that plastic eggs are being sold in West Bengal, tests conducted on samples collected from the city suggested that all eggs are normal.

"Around 22 tests were conducted, which found all eggs were normal in biological origin and there was no existence of any plastic egg in the seized samples," a release issued today by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department said.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation had collected 38 egg-samples from different markets and tested them at the West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences about their originality.

Around 22 tests including physical test, internal quality of egg yolk, albumin, molecular weight of albumin, fatty acid estimation of the eggs and total protein and quantification of albumin were carried out, it said.

Sensory evaluations were also conducted on fried and boiled eggs to ascertain the acceptance of such eggs by consumers. The results confirmed the originality of the eggs and its biological character, the release said.

Further, DNA test was conducted to identify the origin of the eggs by chicken specific primer. The results showed a positive response, which indicated that the eggs examined were original, it said.
