A nor'wester with a sudden whirlwind wrought havoc in at least six villages of Odisha's Kendrapara district today, killing a man and damaging many houses.

The impact of the storm was severely felt in Chagharia, Kalapada, Endara, Sahashpur, Kansara, Rankala and Harazi localities, officials said.

A cattle-grazer was caught amid the turbulent storm and died as a tree fell on him, the police said.

Thatched roofs of houses were carried aloft like bits of paper in the whirlwind and several trees were uprooted when the nor'wester packing a wind speed of 90 to 100 km per hour struck.

The fury lasted hardly for eight to ten minutes, but the whirlwind left its trails of destruction with the toppled electric poles, uprooted trees and damaged houses.

Power supply to these thickly populated villages has also been disrupted, said officials.
