One ANLCA operative arrested, another surrender

A senior leader of a militant group active in the Garo Hills region in Meghalaya was arrested from a tea stall in the city while another surrendered before the police with arms and ammunition, officers said today.

"We have arrested Rex Briller R Marak who is a top cadre of the Achik National Liberation Central Army (ANLCA) active in the Garo Hills and the West Khasi Hills district, from a tea stall in the Police Bazar area last evening," East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang told reporters here.

He said Marak used Shillong as a safe haven for operational planning and command of his cadres in the Garo and West Khasi Hill areas for extortion, kidnapping for ransom and also murder.
 

A case has been registered against him at Shillong Sadar Police Station and he has been charged under sections 120, 121B, 384 and 511 of the IPC.

Investigations are on to ascertain his linkages, specially with regards to the supply of arms, the SP said.

Meanwhile, another ANCLA cadre Charles D Shira of Dalbot-A village in the West Khasi Hills district surrendered before the police here last evening.

He brought along with him an AK-56 rifle with eight rounds of live ammunitions, one round of 7.62 live ammunition, eight rounds of .303 ammunitions, one .32 pistol magazine and twenty rounds of 7.65mm live ammunition.

Shira joined the ANLCA in January through one Sengpan who was one of the leader of ANLCA and was arrested from the Garo Hills.

Police said he deserted the outfit in Dagal area in North Garo Hills a week ago along with arms and ammunition before surrendering.
