British Indian actor Paul Bhattacharjee, whose body was found at the bottom of a cliff in south-east England last week, had been declared bankrupt by a UK court here a week before the suspected suicide.

Bhattacharjee, 53, who appeared in the James Bond film 'Casino Royale' and a number of popular soaps and Shakespearean productions in Britain, had been missing since July 10 after rehearsals for a stage production in London's West End.

The bankruptcy action was filed by the British Revenue and Customs departement but the amount he owed has not yet been declared. It also remains unclear if there were any other creditors.

The High Courts of Justice will inform the Scotland Yard investigation looking at reasons why the successful actor have taken his own life.

Bhattacharjee, who grew up between India and the UK, was based at Redbridge in north London in recent years. He was last seen leaving the Royal Court theatre in London's Sloane Square on July 10, where he had been due to appear in the play 'Talk Show', which began this week.

The actor's son, Rahul Bhattacharjee-Prashar, who lives with his art director mother Arti Prashar from whom Paul was separated, had said his father's disappearance was "completely out of character".
