Press Trust of India Coimbatore(TN)
I) Over two lakh power looms in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts remained silent from this

morning, as part of the indefinite strike by the owners of job working units seeking higher wages from the master weavers.

The owners of nearly 15,000 job working units functioning in the districts have already announced their decision to go on strike since the last wage agreement between them and master weavers were signed some two and half year ago.

The units stopped production from today demanding 80 per cent hike in wages, as several rounds of talks failed to break the deadlock.

About 1.2 crore metres of fabric valued around Rs.2 crores are produced, sources in the powerloom job workers association said, adding, the units had to suffer due to long hours of power cuts which added to the cost.
