President Pranab Mukherjee today conferred the Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme (NSS) awards to volunteers and University officers who have worked in the field of community development and initiation of social education campaigns.

Students and teachers from various Universities of the country were awarded with trophies, certificates and citations by the President for the year 2013-14.

Over 50 such achievers were honoured by the President at the historic Darbar hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan here.

The awards were instituted in the year 1993-94 to encourage the awardees and others to work with dedication for community development in the future.

These annual awards recognise the voluntary service done for environmental protection, participation in literacy programmes and social initiatives like holding of blood donation camps to NSS volunteers, programme officers, NSS units and the Universities and 10+2 council.
