A prisoner undergoing treatment at a government hospital here was allegedly shot dead today by an unidentified person who entered the hospital in the guise of a doctor, police said.

The incident occurred early this morning when the person wearing doctor's white apron entered the M Y hospital ward and pumped the bullet into the head of prisoner Ramdayal, who was sleeping on bed no 17, killing him on the spot and later fled, a sub-inspector at Sanyogitaganj police station said.

The deceased was brought here from Kannod jail for treatment on July 16.

Meanwhile, an accused in a murder case, Jitendra, who was also admitted in the hospital, claimed before police that the assailant had come to target him as originally he was allotted the bed no 17 and last night only he got it changed to bed no 12 because of its foul smell, the police officer said.

Later, the hospital staff shifted Ramdayal to bed no 17, the SI said quoting Jitendra.

A case has been registered in this connection and further investigations are on, he added.
