Calangute MLA Michael Lobo told the state Legislative Assembly that an organised racket has taken roots in the state, providing ration cards to anyone for a price.

"Department of Civil Supplies needs to check this racket. Bangladeshi and Nepali nationals have set up their base in coastal areas. The department should inquire as to how come they got the ration cards, which is an important document," he said, adding the ration cards were being sold to them at Rs 5,000.

Calangute is a tourism hub for beaches like Candolim, Sinquerim, Calangute and Baga.
