Several political and social organisations held separate protests against frequent power cuts in Jammu, where the temperature touched the season's highest today.
Scores of BJP activists, led by party's district unit president Rajesh Gupta, held a protest outside the office of the Power Development Department (PDD) in the city against frequent unscheduled power cuts.
Gupta, while expressing concern over the problems being faced by the people of Jammu on account of unscheduled power cuts, said with the temperature going up each passing day, the PDD is adding to the people's woes.
According to the MeT department, Jammu today experienced the hottest day of the season with the maximum temperature touching 43.6 degrees Celsius.
What is most unfortunate is that the department is headed by the Chief Minister himself, who only shed crocodile tears but failed solve the problem, Gupta said.
He urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to direct the PDD to ensure regular supply of electricity. He also appealed to the CM to take stern action against PDD officials who were not discharging their duties properly and adding to the woes of the consumers.
Meanwhile, a separate protest was held jointly by office-bearers and activists of BJP, Rashtriyawadi Shiv Sena, Hari Market Association, Gumat Bazar Traders' Association and New Hari Market Traders' Association at Hari Market.
A large number of residents of the old city also joined the protest.
Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in-charge Yudhvir Sethi, who led the protest at Hari Market, said it is indeed unfortunate that the people were made to suffer even for basic commodities.
He said the people deposit their bills for water and electricity in time, but still they are not provided regular supply. Sethi urged the government to take immediate steps to mitigate the sufferings of the people.
