Congress leader P L Punia today said here that the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act should be made more stringent so that it can serve its purpose.
Punia, former chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes, was speaking at a press conference here.
He was asked about conflicting demands about the Act. While a section of Maratha community in Maharashtra has been seeking its repeal for alleged misuse, Dalit leaders have demanded that it be made more stringent.

"Atrocities are happening on a large scale in the country and there is need for making the Act more and more strict," he said.
The Congress leader informed at the press conference that the party would be holding a national-level convention in Delhi on January 11 to discuss impact of demonetisation and intensify its agitation for redressal of people's grievances.
