Celebrities Rosie O'Donnell and Maria Shriver, among others have shown support for Rita Wilson, wife of actor Tom Hanks, after she revealed she underwent double mastectomy for breast cancer.

The Hollywood stars took to Twitter to praise Wilson's courage to speak on her illness, in public.

"Amazing woman!", Rosie tweeted, while Shriver wrote, "Proud of my friend.

"Loving you," tweeted Kristin Chenoweth.

Wilson, 58, has taken a break from the play "Fish in the Dark", due to ill health. She underwent mastectomy last week, reported the New York Post.

The "Good Wife" star said she is suffering from an underlying condition, 'lobular carcinoma in situ', which she is closely monitored over the years through mammograms and MRIs.

Later, 'pleomorphic carcinoma in situ' was discovered, but one doctor found no traces of cancer.

Wilson sought a second opinion. A second doctor did find cancer, and a third confirmed those results.

"I am recovering, and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion," Wilson said.

"I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn't 'feel right' ", she added.

Wilson is expected to be back for "Fish in the Dark" on May 5.
