RMP leader murder: Govt files appeal seeking death sentence

Kerala Government today filed an appeal in the high court seeking to award death sentence to 12 accused convicted in the murder of RMP leader T P Chandrasekharan.

While 11 accused had been awarded life imprisonment, one was handed down three years imprisonment by a Special Additional Sessions Court in Kozhikode on Jan 23.

Earlier, the accused had filed appeals challenging their convictions.

During the consideration of the appeals, government had informed the court that it will be filing appeal for enhancement of sentence.

Chandrasekharan, a CPI(M) rebel, was brutally hacked to death at Onchiyam on May 9, 2012. Three CPI(M) local leaders are among the convicted.
 

The special court had also acquitted 24 persons, including P Mohanan, District Secretariat member of the Marxist party.
