The role of the media in the present socio-political scenario in the country was discussed threadbare at an event here today.

The event titled 'Changing Face of Media' was hosted under the Democratic Mirror talk show by the Centre for Public Initiative.

The audience including former Union minister Salman Khursheed, Rajya Sabha MP K C Tyagi, and senior Supreme Court lawyer K T S Tulsi, probed the media's role on a wide range of issues including ownership and political affiliations, growing jingoism and regulation of media organisations.

Khursheed suggested for some sort of regulation of media that was outrightly rejected by journalist Satish Singh.

Another senior journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta batted for a "Communication Commission" with powers to deal with complaints of excess by the media.

Tulsi pointed to the danger of media trial resulting in "miscarriage of justice".

Thakurta said that small part of the media still produced honest journalism despite a large section getting "corrupt and commercialised" with media ownership in the hands of vested interests.

The Democratic Mirror is a unique talk show that will be held every month to focus on contemporary issues faced by the country, said Amrish Ranjan, president of Centre for Public Initiative.
