A flying squad formed to ensure enforcement of model code of conduct has seized an unaccounted cash amounting Rs 58 lakh from four persons in Srigangangar district.
On a tip-off, the officials yesterday stopped a car and on search recovered the cash.
Three men and one woman who were travelling in the car could not explain the source of the money following which the cash was seized and income tax officers were informed, assistant commercial tax officer Krishna Kumar, who was in the flying squad duty, said today.
"It is suspected that the cash was to be used for electioneering," he said.
Model Code of Conduct came into force yesterday with the announcement of Lok Sabha poll schedule.
