Rs five lakh handed over to grandson

More than three decades after a farmer died allegedly in police firing during an agitation, a cheque for Rs five lakh was today handed over as financial assistance to the grandson of the victim.

The cheque was handed over by Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration minister, S P Velumani to R Vijayakrishnan, grandson of Krishna Naicker, who died in police firing during the farmers' agitation between 1970 to 1980 in the presence of District Collector Archana Patnaik, an official release said.

Naicker, hailing from Chinnaya Chettipudur near Sulur on the outskrits, was among the 47 farmers who died in police firing during various protests.
 

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had recently announced construction a memorial for late farmers' leader Narayanasamy Naidu at Vaiyampalayam in the district and a financial assistance of Rs two crore to the bereaved families.
