Southern Railway has decided to redesign the Pamban Cantilever bridge at a cost of Rs.25 crore, Divisional Railway manager Sunil Kumar Garg said today.
The redesigned bridge would be state-of-the-art and easy to operate, he told reporters here.
The bridge was built across the sea connecting Rameswaram island to the mainland more than 100 years ago.

Garg also said the revenue of the Madurai Railway Division from passenger and goods traffic during the year increased by eight per cent till November and touched Rs.454.34 crore.
Automatic ticket vending machine had been installed at seven railway stations to reduce the crowd in front of the counters. Besides arrangement had been made to get tickets using smart cards and coin boxes.
Lift facility would be provided at Madurai and Tirunelveli junctions, he said.
