Saadat Hasan Manto in new English translation

Urdu short story writer Saadat Hasan Manto's collection of urdu short stories is now available in a new English translation.

"My name is Radha: The Essential Manto", an edition of stories which delves deep into the creative world of Manto has been translated by Muhammad Umar Memon, a Professor Emeritus of Urdu literature and Islamic studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

"The critic and translator has compiled Manto's best known stories along with those less talked about in the book," publishers Penguin Random House said today.

Manto is considered one of the most widely read short story writer in Urdu. A pre-eminent practitioner of the genre, he produced 22 collections of short stories.
 

Best known for his short stories, "Bu", "Khol Do", "Thanda Gosht", and "Toba Tek Singh", Manto has been described as "The undisputed master of the Indian short story," by author Salman Rushdie.
