Welcoming the Centre's decision to support Sabarmati Ashram for its centenary celebrations, office bearers of the Ashram Trust said it will help them carry out various activities related to the commemoration in a better way.

During the Union Budget presented today, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced that "Government of India will support the Gujarat Government to commemorate the 100 years of Sabarmati Ashram in 2017 in a befitting manner".

Expressing happiness over the announcement, Director of the Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust, Tridip Suhrud, said it has boosted their confidence.

"I appreciate the announcement made by our Finance Minister about supporting the Ashram in its centenary celebrations. We will work with Gujarat government to commemorate the completion of 100 years. This announcement has boosted our confidence," Suhrud told PTI.

The Sabarmati Ashram, also known as Gandhi Ashram, was home to Mahatma Gandhi from 1917 to 1930 and served as one of the main centres of the Indian freedom struggle, the website of the Ashram says. It was from here on March 12, 1930 that Gandhi launched the famous Dandi march.

"The Ashram came into existence on June 17, 1917. Thus, it will complete 100 years on June 17, 2017. The centenary celebrations by the Ashram will be held over a stretch of three years, during which, we intend to carry out a number of activities," Suhrud said.

Some of the key activities to be carried out by the Ashram include setting up of three new exhibition areas and an interpretation centre for school children at the Ashram, he said.

"We have planned to add some more features in the Ashram as part of this celebration, including setting up of three exhibitions and one interpretation centre for school children. As many as 300 to 400 children visit Ashram every day," Suhrud said.

Apart from that, we will be doing many other activities and events in association with the government, Gandhian institutions, schools and city administration, he added.
