Seventy seven Unmanned Level Crossings (ULC) in Salem Railway division would be converted into limited use subways, a senior railway official said today.

Shubhranshu, Division Railway Manager, Salem Division, said sanction has been obtained for the convertion of 77 out of the 83 unmanned level crossings. Four of them have already been converted while works were on in 13 ULCs and the remaining would also be coverted soon, he said.

The concourse area of Salem Junction was getting widened and the parking lot would be shifted to ease congestion, the release said.

A modernised food plaza in collaboration with IRCTC has also been planned at the junction, he said, adding, a proposal has been sent to Southern Railway Headquarters for extension of Tiruchirapalli-Karur passenger trains up to Salem via Namakkal and Rasipuram.

Earlier, Shubhranshu flagged off a 'safety rath' as part of the campaign to create awareness in using unmanned level crossings. The rath will cover 15 locations in Karur-Dindigul section for two days, carrying audio visual message on safety, the release said.
