Congress President Sonia Gandhi today condoled the death of former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, saying he belonged to the league of Asian statesmen who successfully carried forward the task of nation building.

"Sonia Gandhi has expressed grief and extended her condolences on the passing away of the former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew," the AICC said.

Describing Yew as the builder of modern multi-ethnic Singapore, Gandhi said that he indeed belonged to the league of Asian statesmen who successfully carried forward the task of nation building.

Recalling his visit to deliver the 37th Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial lecture here, Gandhi said his ties with India and the Congress Party were warm.

Lee, who was Singapore's first prime minister, died of severe pneumonia today.
