Several policemen were "injured" today when students of two south Kashmir-based institutions clashed with them and pelted stones during their protests against the death of a youth during last evening's anti- militancy operation in Shopian district.

Students of Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) at Awantipora and Higher Secondary School Pampore in Pulwama district boycotted their classes and took to streets against the killing of Adil Farooq Magray, police said.

Magray, a student, had died during a clash between protestors and security forces in Shopian district last evening.

"The students, both girls and boys, pelted stones on the forces and blocked (Srinagar-Jammu) national highway. To maintain peace security forces deployed in the area dispersed them with maximum restrain," a police spokesman said.

He said a "large number" of police personnel received injuries due to heavy stone pelting by the students in Namblabal in Pampore and University Road in Awantipora.

"The situation was brought under control and the highway was kept open for vehicular movement," the spokesman said.

A complete shutdown was observed in Shopian and Pulwama districts against the death of Magray while clashes between security forces and students were also reported from Handwara town in Kupwara district of north Kashmir and Pulwama town.

However, no student or civilian was injured in the clashes, officials said.
