Syrian activists say that Islamic militants have taken an eastern oil field as they advance along the length of the Euphrates river that stretches through Syria and Iraq.

The Britan-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that fighters from the Islamic State group seized the al-Tanak oil field today. Another group, the activist collective of Deir el-Zour, also reported the seizure.

The field is in the eastern Syrian province of Deir el-Zour, near Iraq.

Yesterday, the group seized Syria's largest oil field as it tries to create a corridor from the border town of Boukamal, to the provincial capital of Deir el-Zour.

Both were seized from other rebel groups. The extremist group, which controls large parts of northern Syria, captured swaths of northern and western Iraq last month.
