A Congress member today urged the government to take action to rescue 17 Indian sailors stranded on a ship off the Dubai coast.

Raising the issue in Lok Sabha, Mullappally Ramachandran said these sailors are facing "phyiscal and mental agony" as they are not having access to drinking water, proper food and medicine.

The matter relates to 17 Indian sailors on board the ship Maharshi Bhavathreya, that belongs to a Mumbai-based company. It is an LPG carrier registered in Singapore.

"This ship has been stagnant off the Dubai coast for almost two years now... I request the Prime Minister, Minister of External Affairs as also Minister of Shipping to immediately intervene so that these sailors in distress are rescued," Ramachandran said during Zero Hour.

The member said one of the sailors is from his constituency in Kerala.

Congress member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury asked the government to look into the closure of tea gardens in north Bengal that has pushed many labourers into poverty.
