Taxi unions plan mega rally on Sept 10 in Kolkata

Press Trust of India Kolkata
Commuters in the city are bracing for another round of hardship as taxi unions plan for a huge rally on September 10 protesting police atrocities and demanding fare hike.

"We will hold a massive rally on September 10 to send a concrete message to the state government," INTUC leader Ramen Pandey told PTI today.

All taxi unions in the city as well as auto and bus unions would be participating in the rally on September 10 in support of their demands, he claimed.

"Our strike yesterday was 100 per cent successful and now it the time for the government to act," Pandey said.

Yesterday's taxi strike was the sixth in the city since August 7 when cabbies went on a flash strike demanding a halt to alleged police harassment and withdrawal of imposition of penalty of Rs 3,000 on them for refusing passengers.

Police have arrested 22 drivers on charges of committing vandalism during the protest.
